What’s the one thing you must eat in Belgium…Belgian Waffles of course. These delicious waffles originated here in Belgium so you’d be foolish not to try one when you’re visiting.
In Bruges, there are so many different options for where to go for waffles, you’ll find lots of small shops selling them in main squares enticing you in with their display of waffles and colourful toppings as well as specialist waffle houses. When I visited, I had 3 waffles over two days. Yes, 2 were from the same place, safe to say I think I found my favourite waffles!
So, where should you eat Belgian waffles?
Oyya
The Belgian Liege waffles at Oyya are baked fresh daily and you can choose from a wide variety of toppings including fruit, ice cream and melted Belgian chocolate. It’s the thick melted chocolate that was the deciding factor for me. It was so delicious and didn’t taste overly sugary or rich. In fact it was so good that I got the exact same waffle the next day as well!
House of Waffles
This is a cosy restaurant in Bruges that offers a huge variety of waffles. There’s so much choice it’s hard to pick what you want. As well as having all the sweet waffles there are many savoury options too. This makes it an any time of day restaurant and there is something for everyone.
House of Waffles does get really busy and is very popular, although there are lots of tables and service is quick so you don’t have to wait too long. We came here in the afternoon and had to wait for about 5 minutes for a table which wasn’t bad at all.
First you’ll need to decide whether you want a Brussels waffle or a Liege waffle. Not sure what the difference is? Don’t worry neither was I! A Liege waffle is smaller with rounded edges whereas a Brussels waffle is more of a rectangular shape. The Liege waffle is made with drops of sugar melted inside and is caramelised on the outside whereas the Brussels waffle is just sprinkled with icing sugar.
Having had the Liege waffles at Oyya, I decided it was time to try a Brussels waffle. I chose a Brussels waffle with chocolate and banana, it also came with a side of ice cream. It was delicious, but for me the chocolate was not as smooth and tasty as the melted chocolate at Oyya, it tasted more like the chocolate sauce you get from a bottle than melted chocolate, so it really down to personal preference.
Since this restaurant is a tourist hotspot, be prepared to may more than you would elsewhere as it is a little pricey.
